Understand, generate and interpret Materials in Design Sketches
ANR-24-CE33-2673, 4 years project (2024-2028)
About the project
This project focuses on the representation of materials in design sketching.
Sketches are pivotal to the design process, enabling the exploration and sharing of ideas, and are used throughout the entire creative workflow. Accurately and correctly depicting materials-such as metal or plastic-in these sketches poses a challenge for many designers. In this project, we propose an approach to partially automate the creation of such sketches based on a shape drawing and a target material. Our approach is grounded in the study of perception and comprises three phases:
1) analyzing material sketches in design to better understand how humans perceive and construct them;
2) leveraging these insights to develop rendering algorithms that replicate this sketching style;
3) using these synthetic sketches and the knowledge regarding their construction to train a deep learning algorithm to interpret them.
We plan to release our datasets and tools as open source.
